What is Self Storage?
Self storage is an individual locked space or unit of varying sizes which is rented on a month-to-month, automatically renewing lease. You get your own unique computer PIN code to access the building(s). You get your own keys (Premier does not keep keys to your leased space) to your locked unit. This is the ‘key’ to self storage, it is on-demand and on your schedule.
What sizes are available and how do I pick my size?
We offer a wide range of sizes to accommodate your storage needs. Unit sizes range from 5x5, or 25 square feet, to 10x30, or 300 square feet. Determining the size of your storage need is easy with the help of our online Size Guide and Storage Calculator. If you need further assistance, just ask our facility managers who are trained to assist you in this decision.
How much does it cost to rent self storage?
Premier has over 30 different sized units with various options including indoor or outdoor access, drive-up exterior units or inside units with common loading dock access or drive-up units inside an enclosed truck slip, climate controlled or non-climate controlled units, regular access hours or even 24 hour access units. While there are choices you can make about the quality, security and access style, we understand that you still want to know, ‘how much will this cost?’ The simplest answer is that renting a space at Premier will range between $50 per month for the smallest most efficient space up to $450 per month for the largest size space with most convenient access and highest level of security.
What kind of documentation is required to rent a storage unit?
We require that a valid state issued identification card or a valid driver’s license. We will take your photo when signing the rental contract in the office. There is some other information we will ask you in some cases per State and/or Federal regulations at the time of rental. Please note that our rental software system is NOT connected to the internet and all personal information kept by Premier only resides on-site. Your personal information cannot be stolen by a hacker or online predator. The information we ask for is to verify who our customers are and to allow us to contact with you or those closely associated with you in case there is a reason to reach you regarding your storage space or account.
What are the payment terms?
Premier wants to make your storage experience stress-free, including paying your bill. Rentals are on a month-to-month anniversary date basis, meaning the day of the month you rent is the same day your rent is due each month. We also offer longer term rental terms which may also have some special discounts, ask the Manager at the time of your rental about these programs.
Do you accept credit cards?
We offer the convenience of AutoPay, which will automatically charge your Mastercard®, Discover®, Visa® or American Express® each month without additional fees. There are other payment options we can accept, however, please discuss those with our Managers at the time of your rental.
How far in advance can I book a reservation?
To reserve a space you just need to make a small, one-time payment, which will apply to your rental. You can book a reservation up to 14 days in advance to help you plan ahead. This timeframe may change depending on the storage unit availability.
Do I get a lock when I rent a unit?
We provide you with a unique cylinder lock which offers the highest protection in terms of locking devices. Each lock has its own unique set of keys. When you return the lock cylinder and the keys this is verification that you have vacated your space and ended your lease. Until a Manager in the office has received your lock and keys back, then we consider that your space is still “leased” and rent will still be due on your anniversary date.
How safe and secure is it at Premier?
Security at the property is the #1 priority at Premier. We have several overlapping and redundant security systems to identify who enters the property including computerized gate control and dozens of cameras watching everyone’s entry and exit from any door in the property. After hours, we have motion detector alarms inside of the building and for those who rent outdoor access units we have alarm systems tied right into your storage unit door. Premier features two separate 6,000 sf drive inside loading areas for your comfort and safety and that of your stored items too; no prying eyes watching what you are moving and storing, only valid tenants can share the loading dock space with you when you inside the facility.
Do I need to give you a notice when I am ready to move out?
Yes, we do require a 30-day move out notice. We understand that sometimes your plans are more abrupt and you may need to end your stay at Premier earlier than expected. Please see the Manager to discuss your specific need and circumstance. Under any situation, if your lock and keys are not returned to a Manager, then we consider that your space is still “leased” and rent will still be due on your anniversary date.
Can anybody drive onto the property?
No. To gain access into a loading dock inside one of the buildings you or an invited guest must enter your unique electronic gate code or PIN #. Premier has access control systems and cameras all throughout the property to monitor anyone entering or exiting the property.
Do I need insurance on my storage space or for my stored goods?
The TRUTH ABOUT INSURANCE is that typically your existing homeowner’s, renter’s or business insurance policy contains provisions covering personal property stored in off-premises locations such as in storage facility or in a dorm for dependants who may be students living away at college or in the military.
Nevertheless, there are some storage customers who may want to think about purchasing TENANT INSURANCE COVERAGE, especially if you live in an apartment or other rental location or if you are between permanent residences and for any reason you do not maintain home or renter’s insurance.
Tenant Insurance is an easy and low cost policy offered by several reputable third party insurance companies featuring month to month coverage; there are no appraisals, no hassle. We have brochures in our office explaining this insurance.
Premier does not seek to make money from you by selling what may be unnecessary insurance. Do not be pressured by what other storage companies may say, TENANT INSURANCE IS NOT MANDATED BY MICHIGAN STATE OR FEDERAL LAW WHEN RENTING SELF STORAGE. Some storage companies do and are legally allowed to mandate proof of insurance as a matter of their company policy, but like all other forms of insurance, it is not lawful to force you to purchase a particular policy or mandate that you can only purchase insurance from a single source provider.
When can I access my unit?
Regular hours for those renting spaces inside of either building are 6 am-10 pm, 365 days. Some tenants may rent a 24 hour accessed space located in certain areas around the property.
What's the difference between office hours and facility access hours?
Office hours are the hours of operation for the property when the Manager will be available to assist you with your storage needs or moving and packing supplies. The facility access hours are the times you use your computerized gate code to get into one of the loading docks and into your rental unit. Please note, if you are delinquent in your monthly rent payment, then your computerized access code will not work and you will be unable to unlock your individual unit. The overlock will only be removed after your account is paid in full.
What is the difference between an indoor and an outdoor unit?
Indoor units are located inside of one of the two buildings on the property and they are accessed by driving inside and parking in of one of the 6,000 sf indoor loading docks. Indoor units can be ground floor or second floor units. Outdoor units are accessed from the outdoors and it is either a drive-up unit or a unit accessible from a common door which opens up on the exterior of the building.
What is a drive-up unit?
A drive-up unit is a ground floor unit accessible directly from the exterior driveway or inside a truck slip. These units are ideal for storing large, heavy items or equipment or even small cars or other vehicles. These types of spaces allow you to load either by driving up to the space directly from an outdoor driveway or an inside truck slip and you can load items directly from your vehicle or truck into your space.
Do you have moving carts available?
Flatbed hand push carts are available inside each of the buildings just inside of the ground floor entry doors leading to the self storage hallways. If you are renting an inside unit and cannot locate a cart, please let the facility Manager know and they will be happy to assist you.
What is a roll-up door vs a ‘swing door’?
Roll-up doors are very similar to garage doors and are opened by sliding the door latch to the left and then lifting the door upward. Roll-up doors are the most common door in self-storage and are wider and sometimes have higher openings than ‘swing-doors’, which look like a roll-up door but they are generally the size of a regular door like the type leading into a bedroom or an office. Swing-doors open and close on side mounted hinges. Both roll-up and swing type doors have the same locking unit and mechanisms.
What is climate control and do I need it?
Climate controlled units are located inside either building off of the common area 6,000 sf loading docks. These areas are cooled or heated to protect your stored belongings from the extreme temperatures. Our climate controlled storage is located inside our two insulated steel and concrete buildings. The areas where the storage spaces are located are temperature controlled with air-conditioning in the summer and heated with gas forced central air in the winter, so your stored items are not exposed to extreme temperatures.
The climate and environment that your items are stored in can have a significant impact on the protection of and the long term sustainability of those items. Climate controlled indoor space inside of a finished building is less likely to be impacted by dirt and dust, or snow and rain and mildew or bugs. Paper or photographs stored in warm and humid environments can degrade the paper or the information on the paper itself. Furniture or clothes stored in non-climate controlled space can absorb moisture and grow mold or mildew or they can become a home to unwanted pests which may only find after you move that furniture or clothes back to your home.
Does Premier have pest control in its buildings?
YES! We take the full protection of your stored items very seriously. We provide professional monthly pest control and systems throughout both of our entire buildings controlling for bugs, rodents or other pests that might invade the premises and harm your belongings.
Does Premier have adequate lighting and power outlets?
YES! Both buildings have automatic lights inside the loading docks, throughout the hallways and above, nearby or actually inside some individual storage units. There are outlets through the building for your use while you are moving in or moving out (tenants are not allowed to leave items plugged in permanently or unattended). Outside, exterior units are protected with high powered LED lighting creating a bright and safe environment whenever the sun goes down.
Do you offer storage for vehicles?
YES! There are spaces available at Premier large enough to fit a small boat or up to 2 cars. Our indoor spaces and indoor hallways are large enough for bicycles or motorcycles or other small ATV’s to be stored indoors. We do NOT have an outdoor parking lot and we do NOT have spaces large enough for big boats or larger RV’s.
Can I get a truck at the property?
YES! Please contact us at Premier, we are a U-Haul dealer and we can help you arrange for a truck at the time you move in or move out. When renting a U-Haul truck at Premier, it is our policy that customers must accept the U-Haul offered truck rental insurance coverage. We also have a moving company, Marching Ant Movers, with an office on-site and this third party company may be the perfect solution for a completely hassle free, touch free move.
